U.S. Congressional Delegation Visits Ukraine, Meets with President Yushchenko

On October 12 and 13, Representative Jim Kolbe (Republican-Arizona), Chairman of the Foreign Operations and Export Financing Appropriations Subcommittee, led a delegation of five United States Congressmen to Kyiv, Ukraine to review U.S. bilateral and multilateral foreign assistance programs. Other members of the delegation included Congressman Martin Sabo (Democrat-Minnesota), Congressman Jim Moran (Democrat-Virginia), Congressman Dennis Rehberg (Republican-Montana), and Congressman John Carter (Republican-Texas).

The delegation met with President Viktor Yushchenko, Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov, and Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn to discuss political and economic reforms in Ukraine, including accession to the World Trade Organization. The Congressmen also visited the Heat Replacement Plant in Chornobyl and an HIV/AIDs clinic which are both funded through the U.S. government's FREEDOM Support Act.

Ukraine was the second stop on their twelve-day, three-country trip that also included Lithuania and Austria.

During their visit to Ukraine, the Congressional delegation participated in a press conference.
