Welcome to The Exhibition
"Ukraine through the Eyes of an American Peace Corps Volunteer"
February, 2004 - March 15, 2004
Location: Ukrainian Catholic University, Lviv, vul. Ilariona Sventsitskoho, 17
"I am pleased to support the opening of the photo exhibit 'Ukraine through the Eyes of an American Peace Corps Volunteer.' The photos were taken by Richard Krauze, a young American who spent two years teaching business development in Rivne. His photos capture the beauty and diversity of Ukraine and its people, as well as the spirit of cooperation and understanding that Peace Corps embodies. For the last ten years, Peace Corps Volunteers have been working together with Ukrainians to strengthen civil society and democracy and support economic development. In the process, Volunteers and their Ukrainian friends and colleagues have gained a better understanding and appreciation of each other's culture. This exhibit, by highlighting the interaction between Americans and Ukrainians, is a wonderful expression of the friendship between our two nations."
Carlos Pascual
U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine
"These beautiful photos portray both the affection that all Peace Corps Volunteers feel for Ukrainians and their land and the photographer's individual passion for Ukraine. Richard Krauze made these photos over more than two years as he recorded his personal search for his roots in the country of his father's birth. Working and living in Ukraine were the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Richard, and these photos express the joy that he received from the people, customs, towns, and landscapes of his ancestral homeland. One has only to reflect for a moment on the faces of old and young Ukrainians who appear in these photos to realize the kinship that Richard felt with Ukrainians. Interspersed among the images also are photos of Richard's fellow American Volunteers as they worked with Ukrainians, celebrated Ukrainian holidays, and found recreation in their adopted Ukrainian communities. Together all the photos reflect the essential belief of Peace Corps - that understanding and appreciation grow when peoples of our two cultures interact together with respect."
Karl Beck
Director, Peace Corps Ukraine
"My time in Ukraine as a Peace Corps Volunteer was
marked by many memorable experiences. I was very
fortunate to work with great colleagues and meet many
wonderful people. In addition to my work with Ecoclub,
an environmental organization in Rivne, I often
ventured out with my camera. My photographic
adventures enabled me to meet many remarkable people,
hear numerous stories, and gain a deeper understanding
of Ukrainian people and culture. Through all my
encounters with Ukrainians, I came to appreciate the
hospitable people and beautiful nature of Ukraine. I
took thousands of pictures, and have selected these 53
images which I believe best capture my experiece and
the people who make Ukraine such a special place."
