Emergency Passports
In cases where the applicant must travel urgently or has an immediate need for a passport, the Embassy or Consulate can issue an emergency limited-validity passport, which cannot be extended. Emergency passports are valid for only 12 months. Usually, same-day issuance is available for applications that are complete and straightforward. In some cases, however, we may be required to refer to the Department of State. Therefore, some cases may take longer. Emergency passport applications must be made in person by the applicant during the public hours of the American Citizens Services Unit, which is any working day, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon
Please follow the Passport Renewal link to access instructions for your specific application type. Application requirements, including fees, for emergency passports are the same as those for full-validity passports.
When your emergency travel has been completed, you are advised to apply for a full-validity passport as soon as possible. If you live in Ukraine, you will complete an application for a full validity passport and bring it to the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy, Kyiv. If you live outside Ukraine, you can submit your application for a full-validity passport to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you reside, or if in the United States, your local Passport Agency. There will be no additional cost as long as the emergency passport is still valid and is presented for cancellation. If the emergency passport expires or is lost, passport application fees must be paid again.
